Adding Finishing Touches to my Bookshelf (it’s done for real now)

Remember that bookshelf I picked up off the side of the road a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and transformed it into something beautiful? No? Well that’s fine, that’s basically the whole story.

Anyhow, I had the whole thing repainted and it looked great. I went on for several months thinking I’d done such a good job painting. That is until one day when I was doing a photo shoot for a different post.

Any guesses? Too late, it was the top of the bookshelf, completely untouched and truly hideous.

I’m not entirely sure how I forgot to paint up there, but we’ll blame it on the fact that I’m short and couldn’t see it.

Since not having the top of the bookshelf painted was such a travesty (and because I couldn’t see it) I thought it would be fun to make it extra cool. The idea was to paint it white and then put fun little doodles inspired by my friend’s suggestions.

It would have been really cool, but I gave up on it for some reason. However, I will share the doodle ideas list.

  • cactus

  • seacorn (seahorse and a unicorn mixed)

  • bumblebee

  • butterfly

  • monkey in a dress that is concerned that her coffee was not steamed well and is also late for the ballroom dance she is attending

  • two pointer dogs doing their thing (pointing birds for those that might not know)

  • a pokemon

  • poodle

  • dancing flowers

Imagine all those as you will.

The next thing to fix was this…

It was an eyesore in my otherwise immaculately beautiful bookshelf, but I had no idea exactly how to fix it.

Then I was inspired by little forest scenes.

I made some little mushrooms out of hot glue and paper clips and paint.

Amazingly they turned out really well.

I painted the base brown as I wanted it to look like dirt.

After much debate and deliberation I decided to remove the screw as well. I think it was a good decision.

Then I made “dirt” by mixing the contents of earl grey tea bag with some mod podge and packing it into the dent so it looked natural.

It then had to dry before adding some finishing touches and the mushrooms and then it was done.

There we have it a little patch of mushrooms growing out of my bookshelf.

It didn’t turn out quite as well as I would have liked but at least it looks intentional now. Plus it’s pretty cute as well.

If you’re still wondering about the top of the bookshelf, I did have pictures at one point. However, they are lost and I don’t feel like looking for them. If you need to imagine what the top looked like before getting painted, just refer to the cheese candle.

Also, let me know if you still think I should try to add the doodles to the top.
