The Sad Case of the Pillows

I moved into a new house about two months ago now. It was partially furnished which means that there is some stuff that I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen had everything been my stuff.

One such example, is the “decorative” throw pillows that were unfortunately a part of my living room.

I was going to write a different post on one of the other projects I’m working on, but found myself entirely uninspired by the complete lack of excitement of those pillows.

Plus they’ve always kind of seemed a bit dirty to me and I can’t wash them. Something had to be done before anything else could happen.

Since these are not my pillows I can’t do any permanent alterations to them (although it would be massively helpful), so I went for the next best thing.

Pillow covers.

These were the fabrics I decided on:

Yes, the one is a dress, but I didn’t end up using it because that was more involved than I wanted to be in this project.

The making of pillow covers is really quite easy. Just cut out a piece of fabric slightly bigger than the pillow you wish to cover, arrange it to your heart’s content, and sew the sides up. If you’re worried about messing it up, don’t. Just make sure there’s a hole big enough for your pillow to fit through and everything will be grand.

I did a variation of the same envelope foldy thing for two the pillow cases, one I didn’t sew, and the last (you may be thinking, “wait I thought there were only three” and you would be right) was an actual pillow that I made out of a backpack I got in Paris, France and stuffed with scraps of fabric.

Just like that, it’s a completely transformed space… sort of.

I’d have to say the way they look still isn’t my favorite, but it is far, far better than how it used to be. Plus it feels more homey and overall cleaner, which is a feeling I am struggling to maintain in this house. I mean seriously, there are dead bugs everywhere; but that’s a story for another time.
